COLMAR-BERG, Luxembourg (Nov. 18, 2016) — Goodyear and the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology (LIST) are investing $52 million in a research and development project focusing on sustainable mobility and next-generation materials.
Funded by Goodyear with support from Luxembourg Government R&D State Aid, the five-year partnership is expected to develop R&D talent for the automotive industry.
The project will involve 38 full-time research posts and “a significant number” of PhD/post-doctoral positions, said the statement. Researchers will be based both at LIST and Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg, which Goodyear is planning to relocate to an “automotive campus” in Bissen, Luxembourg, a few miles southwest of the center's current location in Colmar-Berg.
The initiative will address “ongoing societal challenges and further drive innovation in the field of future mobility,” said Goodyear.
Focus will be on making tires more environmentally friendly — in terms of materials, performance and the manufacturing process.
According to Goodyear, the study will also offer “advancing data science” that will improve processes to deliver tires and shorten product development cycles. Additionally, it will help develop “innovative lightweight materials” to lower the rolling resistance of tires.
