WASHINGTON (Sept. 22, 2016) — Tireco Inc. is recalling 11,904 truck tires after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) denied Tireco's petition for a determination of inconsequential noncompliance.

The tires are Milestar BS623 medium truck tires, size 225/70R19.5 G/14, manufactured for Tireco by Chinese manufacturer Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre Co. Ltd. between June 23, 2013, and Jan. 24, 2015.

The tires are mismarked as “DUAL” on their sidewalls, instead of the correct “SINGLE,' according to a NHTSA safety report. Tireco received no complaints about the tires, but an official of NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation notified Tireco after learning of the mismarking from a tire testing laboratory, it said.

Tireco ordered Shandong Wanda to correct the molds at the factory, then submitted a petition for inconsequential noncompliance, the report said.

However, NHTSA denied the petition. “Marking the word ‘DUAL' in lieu of the word ‘SINGLE' creates a situation in which the driver or end user of the vehicle may overload the tires,” the agency said.

Tireco will replace the tires free of charge. The Gardena, Calif.-based importer told NHTSA it will notify dealers of the recall Oct. 3 and customers between Oct. 10 and Nov. 7.
