Nissan recalls vehicles for possible vehicle fires

WASHINGTON (Sept. 13, 2016) — Nissan North America Inc. is recalling 120,329 Nissan Maxima sedans, Nissan Murano SUVs and Nissan Murano Hybrid SUVs because of possible brake fluid leaks that could cause vehicle fires.

The specific vehicles are 2016-2017 four-door Nissan Maximas manufactured between Feb. 10, 2015 and Aug. 19, 2016; 2015-2017 four-door Nissan Muranos manufactured between Aug. 22, 2014 and Aug. 19, 2016; and 2015-2016 Nissan Murano hybrids manufactured between Aug. 22, 2014 and July 19, 2016, according to a safety recall report issued Aug. 31 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

All of the recalled vehicles are equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control systems, NHTSA said.

These vehicles have ABS actuator pumps that may have lower-than-standard seal hardness, according to the recall document.

Under this condition, the seal may leak brake fluid, NHTSA said. Although the ABS warning light will illuminate, ignoring the warning light may create an electrical short in the actuator circuit, it said.

Nissan will replace affected ABS actuators at no charge, according to NHTSA. The auto maker has not yet provided a customer notification schedule, it said, but owners may call the Nissan customer hotline at 888-327-4236.
