Michelin requests inconsequential noncompliance finding

WASHINGTON (Aug. 23, 2016) — Michelin North America Inc. has submitted a petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a finding of inconsequential noncompliance for 186 Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II passenger tires.

The tires in question are size P215/70R15 97T, manufactured Jan. 10-13, 2016.

Michelin told NHTSA that two of the digits in the tire identification number that identify the week and year of manufacture were inadvertently transposed. Instead of the correct “0216,” denoting that they were manufactured during the second week of 2016, they bear the marking “0126.”

The incorrect coding has been recorded in Michelin's records, making the tires easy to identify in case of a recall, Michelin told NHTSA. Also, the plant at which the tires were made will switch to a three-digit code in 2025, meaning that tires manufactured in the first week of 2026 will have a different code from the noncomplying Tiger Paws, Michelin said.

NHTSA published a notice about Michelin's petition in the Aug. 3 Federal Register. The notice can be found here.
