WASHINGTON (May 26, 2016) — Pirelli Tire L.L.C. is voluntarily recalling 42 P Zero Trofeo track tires for lacking a date code.
The tires in question — in size 225/50ZR15 91Y — were manufactured between April 1 and April 7, 2015, at Pirelli's factory in Kocaeli, Turkey, Pirelli told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
They are state-of-the-art track tires that have relatively short useful lives because of their design and specialized usage, according to the tire maker.
After the mold was placed in service, the date code insert fell out of the cavity, Pirelli said. The lack of a date code makes it more difficult to identify the tires in case of a safety recall.
Pirelli has instructed its U.S. warehouses to return all unsold tires to the Pirelli Warranty Center for disposal. The company began May 9 to send letters informing dealers and customers of the recall.
