WASHINGTON (April 22, 2016) — Six tire manufacturers have won 2016 awards in the Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) honors sponsored by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

Created in 1981, the SHIP Awards honor RMA member companies for excellence in worker health and safety, the association said.

There are two categories of SHIP awards, according to the RMA. They are:

    • Excellence awards, which honor tire manufacturing facilities that achieve a Days Away Restricted Transfer (DART) rate 75 percent better than the average achieved by plants that submitted data to the RMA; and

    • Improvement awards, which honor facilities that achieve DART rates that are both 10 percent better than the previous year and the same or better than the RMA average.

The RMA awarded seven Excellence awards and 13 Improvement awards in 2016, the association said. The awards are as follows:

    EXCELLENCE

    • Bridgestone Americas Inc., in Griffin, Ga., Oxford, N.C., and Trenton, S.C.

    • Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., in Clarksdale, Miss.

    • Michelin North America Inc., in Starr, S.C., and Anderson, S.C.

    • Yokohama Tire Corp., in West Point, Miss.

    IMPROVEMENT

    • Bridgestone Americas Inc., in Graniteville, S.C., Russellville, Ark., and Abilene, Texas

    • Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., in Tupelo, Miss.

    • Michelin North America Inc., in Spartanburg, S.C., Columbia, S.C., Lexington, S.C., and Covington, Ga.

    • Goodyear, in Fayetteville, N.C., Gadsden, Ala., Lawton, Okla., and Social Circle, Ga.

    • Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. in White, Ga.

These facilities were the winners among 45 RMA member plants that submitted data, according to the association. The data submitted by the facilities is identical to that they provide to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it said.
