LAKELAND, Fla. (April 21, 2016) — Monro Muffler Brake Inc. is acquiring McGee Auto Service & Tires of Lakeland, adding McGee's 30 retail locations to its growing Florida network of stores.

Terms of the deal, expected to close May 1, are not being disclosed.

Established as McGee Tire in 1974 by John McGee, the dealership is majority owned by his grandson Kevin McGee and McGee Tire executives Bob Lanpher  and Terry Borglund – president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer, respectively.

Monro operates 52 retail stores in Florida, all acquired in the past two years and now operating under the Tire Choice banner, a brand Monro acquired in August 2014 in its purchase of Hennelly Tire and that dealership's 35 stores.

Other acquisitions in Florida include Gold Coast Tire & Auto Centers (nine stores) in December 2014 and Martino Tire (eight stores) in March 2015.

The McGee stores in and around Tampa already are shown as Tire Choice locations on Monro's thetirechoice.com store locator.

The deal includes McGee's commercial assets, including its retread plant in Lakeland. The dealership reported $63 million in sales in 2014, split 50/50 retail/commercial.

John McGee started the company in 1974 by buying Lakeland OK Tire Stores, a two-store dealership,  from Joe Ruthven. The dealership became a Goodyear authorized dealer in 1979.

“This was done to ensure better opportunities for our associates and continue the McGee legacy,” Kevin McGee told the" Lakeland Ledger."

“As of right now, all employees are staying with the company and all locations are staying open.”
