OTRAS VOCES: Los ejecutivos de neumáticos invitan a acciones para el cambio climático

    AKRON, OHIO — El cambio climático es uno de los problemas más controvertidos que se debaten actualmente. Los políticos generalmente creen o no creen en él y es raro ver a grandes corporaciones multinacionales lanzando una voz de alerta para pedir más regulaciones.

     Eso es lo que lo hace más significativo que cinco de los principales ejecutivos en la industria de neumáticos de Estados Unidos estén instando a los legisladores a tomar medidas acerca del cambio climático.

     Gary Garfield, CEO de Bridgestone Americas Inc.; Pete Selleck, Presidente de Michelin North America Inc.; Pierluigi Dinelli, Presidente de Pirelli Tire North America Inc.; James Hawk, Presidente de Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc.; y Takaharu Fushimi, CEO de Yokohama Tire Corp., recientemente escribieron una carta abierta al Congreso para presentar su caso.

     Escribieron que casi todos los científicos alrededor del mundo, dicen que NASA calculó la cifra en 97 por ciento, creen que el cambio climático es una amenaza legitima, "provocada por la actividad humana".

     Dijeron que si un experto en una de sus plantas les advirtiera que un evento trágico tenía un 97 por ciento de probabilidad de ocurrir, "el CEO estaría obligado a obrar en consecuencia con la advertencia". Y si no lo hiciera, y la predicción se hace realidad, ese CEO "perdería su trabajo y podría... enfrentar graves consecuencias legales".

     Con la elección presidencial a menos de 10 meses de llevarse a cabo, se debe felicitar a estos ejecutivos de neumáticos por atraer la atención a este problema crítico. La mayoría de los candidatos que se postulan para el cargo más alto de la nación no han revelado ningún plan para combatir el cambio climático si son elegidos. Cuatro no creen que el cambio climático sea real.

     Para ser justos, los políticos y los legisladores pueden hacer muy poco. Depende de las compañías en todo el mundo reducir su huella de carbono con objeto de reducir los efectos del cambio climático.

     Los cinco ejecutivos dijeron que no solo están hablando de ello sino también están practicando lo que predican. Dicen que sus compañías están haciendo esfuerzos para reducir sus huellas de carbono, pero el Congreso necesita presionar para tener un marco de trabajo regulatorio más coordinado e inversiones en tecnología ecológica. "Aunque somos compañías relativamente grandes, en comparación con el panorama en general, somos demasiado pequeños para hacer un cambio significativo", escribieron.
