BOXBOROUGH, Mass.—The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) has accredited TÜV Rheinland of North America Inc., a Boxborough-based testing, inspection and certification body, as an inspection body to test vehicle lifts in the U.S. and Canada.
TÜV said the accreditation means it can offer complete testing of automotive lift equipment to ALI standards for the North American, European Union and global markets.
ALI created its lift certification program in 1993. Building codes in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., require that installed vehicle lifts meet the Automotive Lift Construction, Testing and Validation (ALCTV) safety standards issued by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ALI.
Only lifts tested by third-party nationally accredited testing labs can carry the gold ALI Certified label and be listed in the ALI Directory of Certified Lifts. TÜV is certified to test products against ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2011, the current recognized safety standard.
Among various criteria, lift testing involves verifying the machinery can hold 150 percent of its rated load capacity, system and component testing, visual inspection and verification of structural integrity, as well as proper instructional materials.
