WASHINGTON (Oct. 30, 2015) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted petitions for decisions of inconsequential noncompliance from Goodyear and Tireco Inc.
The agency also said it had received a petition for inconsequential noncompliance from Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C. All three notices appeared in the Oct. 29 Federal Register.
Goodyear's petition concerned 79 Goodyear G316 LHT commercial truck trailer tires, size 295/75R22.5 LRG. The sidewall markings on those tires read, “4 Plies Steel Cord,” instead of the correct “5 Plies Steel Cord.”
All the other sidewall markings on the tires were correct, Goodyear told NHTSA. The tires meet or exceed all applicable federal performance standards, and NHTSA has granted similar petitions in the past, the Akron-based tire maker said.
Tireco's petition involved approximately 1,600 Tireco Power King Traction tires and Milestar Traction tires manufactured between March 1, 2014, and March 25, 2015.
The tire identification numbers (TINs) on those tires are incomplete because they don't have the tire size codes required by statute, Tireco told NHTSA.
The incomplete TINs were inconsequential, Tireco said, because they don't have any impact on tire performance, and also because the tire size information is available in the actual tire size markings on the sidewalls.
Conti's petition involves approximately 3,627 Continental CST 17 spare tires, size T125/70R17, manufactured between March 18, 2012, and April 11, 2015. These tires were sold mostly to General Motors Co., with a few sold in the replacement market, Conti told NHTSA.
The size designation markings on the tires' sidewalls do not contain the tire type code designator symbol from the Tire and Rim Association, as required by law, Conti said.
Only the “T” is missing from the tire size designation markings, and this omission has no bearing on the performance of the temporary spares, Conti said.
