WASHINGTON (Oct. 21, 2015) — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will hold a meeting Oct. 27 on a new special investigation report involving passenger vehicle tire safety.
The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the NTSB Conference Center at 429 L'Enfant Plaza S.W. in Washington, D.C., and the public and press are invited.
The report is titled, “Selected Issues in Passenger Vehicle Tire Safety and Safety Alert — Drivers: Manage Tire Risks for a Safer Ride.” It covers issues discussed by various participants during the NTSB Passenger Vehicle Tire Safety Symposium held in Washington Dec. 9-10, 2014.
The much-awaited report is expected to contain the NTSB's recommendations on how to improve tire registration for identifying tires involved in a recall.
Tire registration was a controversial point during the December 2014 meeting. The Rubber Manufacturers Association recommended a return to mandatory registration at the point of sale, which had been law in the 1970s but was repealed in the Surface Transportation Act of 1982.
However, the Tire Industry Association (TIA) opposed a return to mandatory registration. Such a move would not appreciably improve registration rates, TIA said, but only leave tire retailers liable for potentially ruinous fines for noncompliance.
The notice of the meeting appeared in the Oct. 21 Federal Register. It can be found by clicking here.
