QUINCY, Mass. (Sept. 2, 2015) — Sullivan Tire and Auto Service awarded $5,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school students on the South Shore.
The effort is part of the dealership's $25,000 Sullivan Tire Scholarship Fund, set up over a period of five years for the Germantown Neighborhood Center (GNC).
Vice President of Marketing Paul Sullivan presented $1,000 scholarships to five recipients from the GNC, located in the heart of one of Quincy's largest housing developments.
Students are selected by a committee based on their applications and essays and on acceptance to a college or post-high school technical school. This year's recipients are Sylvia Sanchez, Boston College; William Young, Dean College; Victoria Samsel, Temple University; Vanessa Anjunthe, University of Massachusetts-Boston; and Patricia Brennan, Quincy College.
“I know firsthand what it is like to be a kid growing up in this community and having no resources for college,” said Mark Gillard, marketing and advertising manager at Sullivan Tire and chair of the Neighborhood Center board of directors. “Education plays a key role in breaking the cycle of poverty, and the scholarships help provide some relief from the burden of paying for higher education.
“These kids deserve a shot at college and I am proud to work for a company that recognizes that.”
