TORONTOOntario's sixth annual Tire Take Back event collected 62,891 scrap tires and raised $115,876 for the Sunshine Foundation of Canada, organizers said.
The event, held June 1-6, encouraged Ontario residents to drop off their used tires at participating collectors across the province.
Organizers presented a check to the Sunshine Foundation July 23 at Rock City Auto Supplies Ltd. in Sudbury, Ontario, according to a news release. Sudbury was chosen for the event because it collected the most tires14,837 of any Ontario community, the release said.
Since its inception, Tire Take Back has collected more than 800,000 scrap tires throughout Ontario, according to organizers. Ontario Tire Stewardship, the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture are the organizers.
Founded in 1987, the Sunshine Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of children with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses by making their dreams come true, the organization said.
