FCA to recall Jeep Cherokees for fire threat

DETROIT (June 26, 2015) — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is launching a voluntary recall of about 164,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs globally to install shields that protect the power liftgate control components from moisture.

The liftgate control modules in 2014-15 Cherokees equipped with power liftgates may be inadvertently exposed to water, which can cause the mechanism to catch fire. In a statement, FCA said it began investigating the issue after a vehicle fire was reported directly to the auto maker.

The auto maker said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the defect.

About 99,436 of the affected vehicles are in the U.S., 13,195 in Canada, 2,406 in Mexico and 48,966 elsewhere. It is unclear how many affected vehicles are still on dealer lots.

All affected customers will be notified by the company via mail and can bring their vehicle to any registered Jeep dealership for repair free of charge.
