WASHINGTON (June 3, 2015) — The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has declared June 24 its second annual “Safety Stand-Down Day.”
On that day, ISRI asks all scrap recycling businesses — both ISRI members and non-members — to spend at least one hour each shift focusing on safety education. The theme for this year's Safety Stand-Down Day is “Be Safe to Be There,” ISRI said.
The institute developed Safety Stand-Down Day in 2014, in response to an extraordinarily high number of fatalities and injuries in scrap recycling facilities, according to ISRI Chair Doug Kramer.
“With the focus on safety that day, and every one since, we have started to move the needle,” Mr. Kramer said. “Fatalities are down, and an analysis of claims by RecycleGuard shows that, over the last three years, ISRI members have shown to be significantly safer than non-ISRI members in the recycling industry based on losses as a percentage of premiums.”
