WASHINGTON (May 5, 2015) — Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C. has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a decision of inconsequential noncompliance with federal tire safety standards regarding 1,062 replacement motorcycle tires.
The tires are Continental TKC80 bias tires, size 120/70-19 M/C 60Q, manufactured between April 8, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2015.
The tire size designation markings on the sidewalls do not contain the correct construction code designation symbols from the Tire and Rim Association Yearbook, Conti told NHTSA.
The markings have the designation symbol “B,” which signifies bias-belted construction, rather than “-,” which signifies bias construction, Conti said.
Because all the other sidewall markings are correct and the tires meet all other applicable federal performance and safety standards, Conti said, the error is inconsequential as to customer safety.
If NHTSA denies Conti's petition, the tire maker will be required to conduct a formal recall of the tires.
Interested parties have until June 3 to comment on Conti's petition. The notice, which appeared in the May 4 issue of the Federal Register.
