WASHINGTON (April 9, 2015) — The Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) issued a message urging its members to contact Congress in support of stronger trade laws and more stringent enforcement of current laws.
“We don't have much time,” AAM President Scott Paul said in an April 8 press release. “President Obama and members of Congress are closer than ever to reaching an agreement on historic trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP.
“That's why we must make sure the TPP creates a level playing field for American workers and businesses,” Mr. Paul said.
Mr. Paul's press release contained a link to a prepared letter AAM supporters could sign so that AAM could transmit the signatures to Congress.
“American manufacturing can benefit from trade, but only if foreign countries are deterred from freely cheating with currency manipulation and sending their excess capacity into our market,” the letter said.
“Opening new markets must be balanced with strong enforcement of our rights under trade agreements already on the books,” it said. “And any legislation to authorize new trade agreements should stop currency manipulation, enforce our customs laws and strengthen our laws against unfair trade.”
