WASHINGTON (April 3, 2015) — BMW of North America Inc. has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) seeking a finding of inconsequential noncompliance regarding incorrect tire information on some of its X5 model's identification labels.
The vehicles in question are 68 BMW X5 xDrive35i and X535d multipurpose passenger vehicles, model year 2015, built between Oct. 3 and Oct. 7. 2014.
On these vehicles, the vehicle identification labels and some of the tire identification labels show that the vehicles were originally equipped with 18-inch tires and rims, BMW told NHTSA. Actually, they were equipped with 19-inch tires and rims.
The noncompliance is inconsequential because a number of information sources and services exist to tell vehicle owners of the correct tire size if they are unsure, BMW said.
If NHTSA rejects the petition, BMW will have to carry out a formal recall of the vehicles.
