SEMA supports national monuments bills

WASHINGTON (Feb. 27, 2015) — The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is throwing its support behind legislation to limit the president's power to designate national monuments.

The Diamond Bar, Calif.-based trade group, through its SEMA Action Network, is urging its members to contact their senators and congressmen in support of S. 228 and H.R. 900, Senate and House companion bills.

“Roads and trails for motorized vehicles are frequently closed as a result of such (national monuments) designations,” SEMA said regarding its support of the bills.

According to association, H.R. 900 and S. 228 would prohibit the president from acting unilaterally to designate national monuments without input from local communities or state representatives.

The bills would also require the approval of Congress and state legislatures to designate national monuments, and allow greater public involvement in land use decisions, SEMA said.
