LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 23, 2015) — The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has awarded 48 grants worth $587,000 to fund community scrap tire drop-offs and other scrap tire cleanups across the state.
The drop-offs will be held in the spring and summer of 2015, according to the DEQ.
“As part of an ongoing effort to prevent the illegal dumping of scrap tires, these community events will provide affordable, convenient tire recycling opportunities to residents,” The agency said. Four of the grants will fund removal of scrap tire piles on private property.
By far the largest grant — $168,000 — goes to scrap tire cleanup efforts in Detroit. The other grants range from $2,000 to $36,000.
