RICHBURG, S.C. (Feb. 9, 2014) — Giti Tire Group is scheduled to break ground Feb. 12 on the $560 million tire plant it's planning to build near Richburg, in rural Chester County.

The plant will be built on the Carolinas I-77 Mega Site and will combine manufacturing and distribution activities at a structure that eventually will span 1.8 million square feet.

Brad Cole Construction, of Carrollton, Ga., already has started initial ground clearng at the 1,100-acre site along Interstate 77 in South Carolina's Piedmont area, about 50 miles southwest of Charlotte, N.C.

Giti will receive $40 million or more in economic benefits from state, county and local government entities toward construction of plant in the form of grants toward purchasing the land and “job development credits.”

The plant is expected to create up to 1,700 jobs. Output is put at 5 million car and light truck tires a year at full capacity.

Giti officials said last year that construction would take about 22 months from ground-breaking.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is expected to attend, according to local news reports, along with top-level Giti Tire executives and representatives from Shimizu Construction of Tokyo, Gresham Smith and Partners, the architect of Nashville, Tenn., and Brad Cole Construction.
