BRYAN, OhioTitan Tire Corp.'s Bryan OTR tire plant became a temporary treatment center recently for about 400 ducks that were covered in oil following a used lubricating oil leak on the plant's grounds.
On Jan. 3 used lubricating oil leaked from an above-ground storage tank at the factory, entered the storm water system and flowed into Prairie Creek, Titan Tire said.
Hundreds of birds, mostly ducks, were impacted. Titan hired Tri State Bird Rescue & Research Inc. of Newark, Del., to decontaminate and treat the ducks that are being housed in a section of the factory.
Tri State Executive Director Lisa Smith told Tire Business that six of her employees are on site to treat the ducks and it will take a couple of weeks before they can all be released.
Titan said the oil release has been contained and it is actively addressing the incident. A company spokesman declined to provide additional details.
