Been a busy year for M&As

    AKRON—American Tire Distributors Holdings Inc. (ATD) and Monro Muffler Brake Inc. dominated the industry's mergers and acquisitions activity this past year, spending $830 million and $83 million, respectively.

    ATD's six separate acquisitions represent nearly $800 million in annual sales, while Monro's four acquisitions represent about $80 million in sales.

    The major deals this year, listed alphabetically, were:

    American Tire Distributors Holdings Inc. (Huntersville, N.C.)

    c Wholesale business of Trail Tire Distributors Ltd., Alberta; $27.3 million, June (including Extreme Wheel Distributors Ltd., Alberta);

    c Wholesale business of RTD-Calgary, Calgary, Alberta; $20.7 million; June.

    c Wholesale business of RTD-Edmonton, Edmonton, Alberta; $31.9 million; June.

    c Wholesale business of Kirks Tire Ltd., Edmonton, Alberta; $73 million; June.

    c Terry's Tire Town, Alliance, Ohio; $365 million; February; ($500 million in annual sales).

    c Hercules Tire & Rubber Co., Findlay, Ohio; $311.5 million; January ($500+ million in annual sales).

    ATV/American Tire Depot (Cerritos, Calif.)

    c Ace Tire Center, San Diego (six stores); March/April.

    c Phillips Tire Co., Fullerton, Calif. (five stores).

    Best-One Tire (Indianapolis)

    c Terry's Tire Town's commercial vehicle tire business, four locations in Ohio; $3.9 million; August.

    Bob Sumerel Tire Co. (Erlanger, Ky.)

    c Kauffman Tire CV stores in Ohio; April ($25 million in annual sales).
