UPPER NYACK, N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2014) — Michael Blumenthal, retired vice president of the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), has formed a consulting company, Marshay Inc., that will specialize in all matters related to scrap tire management.

“My goal is to provide practical advice on all scrap tire matters,” Mr. Blumenthal said. “I believe my 28 years of experience provides a unique insight and understanding of how the scrap tire industry works, and how it relates to the larger solid waste and recycling industry.”

He started in the scrap tire industry with Oxford Energy Co., a tires-to-energy firm, in 1986, and joined the RMA in 1990. In his 24 years with the RMA, Mr. Blumenthal became one of the nation's foremost experts on scrap tire disposal and recycling.

During his tenure at the RMA, Mr. Blumenthal worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Highway Administration and all 50 state regulatory agencies to create workable regulations governing the abatement, processing and end-use of scrap tires.

During that period, the percentage of annually generated scrap tires going to end-use markets rose to nearly 85 percent in 2014 from 11 percent in 1990, and the number of stockpiled tires in the U.S. fell to 120 million from 1 billion.

Mr. Blumenthal is president of the new venture.
