WASHINGTON (Aug. 27, 2014) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology, as well as a supporting comprehensive research report on V2V.
The report includes analysis of NHTSA's research findings in several key areas of V2V, including technical feasibility, privacy and security, the agency said.
It also contains preliminary estimates on costs and benefits of a V2V standard, NHTSA said. According to the report, a V2V standard could prevent up to 592,000 crashes and 1,083 highway deaths ever year.
“V2V technology represents the next great advance in saving lives,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “This technology could move us from helping people survive crashes to helping them avoid crashes altogether.”
The advance notice on V2V rulemaking has not yet been published in the Federal Register. Copies of both the notice and the report are available on the NHTSA website.
