WASHINGTON (Aug. 12, 2014) — Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., has introduced S. 2760, the Motor Vehicle and Highway Safety Enhancement Act of 2014, covering a six-year funding reauthorization for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It also would amend legal requirements for recalls for tire and auto manufacturers going through bankruptcy and set stricter civil and criminal penalties for auto safety violations, according to a press release from the Automotive Safety Association (ASA).
Also, the bill would update the highway safety grant program and revise criteria for ignition interlock grant funding. S. 2760 incorporates the language of S. 921, which requires that recalled rental cars are repaired before being leased to customers.
The bill is before the Senate Commerce Committee, which is not expected to hold hearings on the legislation before the Senate recesses to prepare for congressional elections, the ASA said.
The text of S. 2760 is not yet available on THOMAS, the legislative website of Congress.
