PIKES PEAK, Colo. (July 2, 2014) — The 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) was shrouded in tragedy after a motorcycle racer died on Sunday, June 29 during the competition.
Bobby Goodin, 54, died after sustaining injuries when he crashed his Triumph Daytona 675R.
According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Mr. Goodin lost control of his motorcycle while trying to slow down in a gravel parking lot on the top of Pikes Peak.
After the bike went airborne, Mr. Goodin landed on a group of rocks. EMTs tried to resuscitate him until a helicopter arrived to take him to Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs, the newspaper reported.
On Sunday evening, the El Paso County (Colo.) Sheriff's Office confirmed Mr. Goodwin's death.
He is the first motorcycle racer to die during the PPIHC since Bill Gross in 1982.
