DETROIT (June 17, 2014) — Michael Schumacher's management has disclosed that the seven-time Formula 1 world champion is no longer in a coma and is now undergoing rehabilitation at an undisclosed location.
Mr. Schumacher, 45, has been transferred from a hospital in Grenoble, France, where he had been admitted Dec. 29, 2013, after a skiing accident in which he struck his head on a rock, leaving him in a coma.
A statement from Mr. Schumacher's spokesperson Sabine Kehm issued June 16 reads as follows: “Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma any more.
“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.
“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes. We are sure it helped him.
“For the future, we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”
Ms. Kehm has also made it clear that there are no plans for any further bulletins on Mr. Schumacher's situation, and that no more information will be forthcoming.
