WASHINGTON (March 6, 2014) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined two Chinese motorcycle manufacturers and their U.S. distributor $725,000 for illegally importing more than 12,000 motorcycles and recreational vehicles into the U.S. that lack EPA certification showing they meet federal pollution standards.
In addition, the three companies — Chinese manufacturers Zhejiang CFMOTO Power Co. Ltd. and Chunfeng Holding Group Co. Ltd., and their Plymouth, Minn.-based distributor, CFMOTO Powersports Inc. — have agreed to take steps to control emissions from those vehicles, and recall and replace fuel tanks in approximately 1,000 more that fail to meet EPA evaporative emissions standards, the EPA said.
In the settlement approved March 4 by the EPA's Environmental Appeals Board, the illegal vehicles were imported into the U.S. between 2007 and 2013.
