TOPEKA, Kan.Michelin North America Inc.'s BFGoodrich brand has secured presenting sponsor rights for the Sports Car Club of America's Mazda MX-5 Cup, extending its five-year-old relationship with the single-make road-racing series.
BFG replaces Playboy Entertainment Inc. as the series' presenting sponsor. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Officially the series will be known as the Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires. BFG has been the series' spec tire supplier since 2009.
The MX-5 Cup is known within the paddock as 'must see' racing, with many races determined on the last lap, said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports.
Key to the success is great partners, and we have enjoyed fantastic support from both the marketing and technical sides of BFGoodrich Tires.
We're thrilled to have them step up as the presenting sponsor for 2014.
The series spec tire is the BFGoodrich g-Force R1-S.
The 12-race 2014 season begins March 12-14 with two races at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway, as part of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship race weekend, and concludes Oct. 1-3 at Road Atlanta, in conjunction with the Petit Le Mans/Tudor USCC.
Five of the dual-race weekend events are being held together with Tudor USCC weekends, with the other round, June 27-29, scheduled together with the IndyCar Series in Houston.
The series is considered part of the MazdaSpeed Motorsports Ladder; the series winner gets a Mazda-supported ride in the next higher series in the Ladder.
Peter Calhoun, motorsport mar-keting manager for BFGood-rich Tires, noted BFG and Mazda have had a relationship for more than four decades.
