WASHINGTON (Oct. 23, 2013) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has honored 55 shippers, logistics companies and freight carriers for outstanding environmental achievements with the 2013 SmartWay Excellence Awards.
The EPA has honored freight companies with SmartWay awards since 2006. Honorees are members of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a voluntary organization overseen by the EPA that encourages and rewards fuel savings and greenhouse gas reductions in the U.S. trucking industry.
Among other things, the SmartWay program verifies trucks, truck parts, and both new and retreaded truck tires as fuel-efficient products. The EPA estimates that SmartWay partners have saved 65 million barrels of oil since 2004.
Shipper and logistic management nominees for the SmartWay Excellence Awards were evaluated based on their impact, size and commitment to using high-performing SmartWay freight carriers, the EPA said. Nominees in the freight carrier category were evaluated based on their efficiency and environmental performance in moving products and merchandise, the agency said.
