CORTLAND, N.Y. (June 13, 2013) — The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) was recently presented with a U.S. flag that flew in Afghanistan.
During the recent Petty's Garage Spring Fling Car Show in Level Cross, N.C., ALI President R.W. "Bob" O'Gorman received the flag that, for a time, flew over Forward Operating Base (FOB) Geronimo in Afghanistan.
Presenting the flag was U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Ryan Anderson, who flew the flag over the base on ALI's behalf after winning a Facebook giveaway contest sponsored by the institute last October. Mr. Anderson received an ALI/Petty's Garage hat autographed by NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty.
The flag given to ALI was accompanied by a U.S. Marine Corps certificate stating: "This certifies that the accompanying United States Flag was flown over FOB Geronimo, amid the battlefields of Afghanistan, during the decisive operations against enemy forces in Helmand Province of Afghanistan on 15 March 2013. Presented to Automotive Lift Institute."
Mr. O'Gorman, who is a Gulf War veteran, said he was honored to accept the flag and will frame it along with the certificate at ALI's Cortland headquarters.
"To think that a small gesture made through the ALI Facebook page inspired a Marine to fly this flag on our behalf while serving in harm's way, and then to carry it home to personally give it to us, is truly humbling," Mr. O'Gorman said.
