COLUMBIA, Md. (April 16, 2013) — A recent survey from market research companies Arbitron Inc. and Edison Research, "The Infinite Dial 2013: Navigating Digital Platforms," found that 53 percent of Americans, an estimated 139 million people, own smartphones, up from 44 percent last year. Tablet ownership jumped to 29 percent of the population this year from 17 percent last year, the report said.
The survey also included questions about social networking and found that more than one in four Americans—an estimated 71 million people—check a social network several times per day.
In addition, 45 percent of respondents listened to online radio in the past month, more than double the percentage (21 percent) five years ago.
The study was based on data from 2,021 respondents aged 12 and older reached in a national telephone survey conducted in January and February.
