WASHINGTON (April 11, 2013) — Gina McCarthy is scheduled to appear before a Senate committee today to begin her confirmation process to become the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator.
The Senate committee on environment and public works said it has scheduled the hearing for 10:30 a.m., and will broadcast it live on the Web. Ms. McCarthy, who currently serves as the assistant administrator for the office of air and radiation for the EPA, was nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Lisa Jackson, who stepped down shortly after Mr. Obama was sworn into office for a second time.
Before coming to the EPA in 2009, Ms. McCarthy led environmental initiatives in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
"As a top environmental official in Massachusetts and Connecticut, she helped design programs to expand energy efficiency and promote renewable energy," Mr. Obama said when announcing her nomination during a March news conference. "As assistant EPA administrator, Gina has focused on practical, cost-effective ways to keep our air clean and our economy growing."
