SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (April 4, 2013) — Denis Pierre Bouchard, 29, was recently sentenced in Saskatoon provincial court for stealing about 1,000 vehicle batteries and selling them for recycling, according to a report in Saskatchewan-based The StarPhoenix.
Mr. Bouchard, who was serving a 14-month conditional sentence at the time, broke into multiple business compounds in the fall of 2012 to steal batteries, which he then sold for between $5 and $10 each. He reportedly made about $6,000 by collecting recycling fees on the stolen goods, the news article indicated.
"He describes his activity as trying to keep food on the table to support himself," defense lawyer Val Harvey said in court, according to the newspaper. "He actually put a lot of work into committing these offenses."
Mr. Bouchard's conditional sentence was terminated, The StarPhoenix reported, and he was sentenced to an additional 14 months in jail on the new charges.
