Crain News Service report
OTTAWA, Ontario (April 2, 2013) — A hike on recycling fees built into the price of tires sold in Ontario went into effect April 1, drawing criticism from farmers in the province.
In some cases, the recycling fee on a single tire could jump to between $117 and $352 from $15 , according to a report in Canada's Sun News.
Farmers could end up paying thousands of dollars more for agricultural equipment, or take their business elsewhere — a fact that's prompted some Ontario farmers and tire dealers to circulate a petition asking the government to reverse the hike, the Chatham (Ontario) Daily News reported.
"Everybody seems to think it's wrong, but it's being forced through," Ontario Tire Dealers Association President Bruce Barnim told the news agency. "The farmers are being really hard hit. It is going to affect food prices. The farmers affect everybody."
Ontario Tire Stewardship maintains the fees are in line with the cost of tire recycling, the Sun News article indicated.
