KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 2, 2013) — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating a March 18 accident at a Kansas City tire recycling and used tire business, in which an employee lost both legs in a tire shredding machine.
Marco Jamies, 40, had worked at ABC Tire L.L.C. about a month at the time of the accident, according to Chris Smith, owner of ABC Tire. The shop was down for scheduled maintenance, and Mr. Jamies had invited a friend who didn't work at ABC Tire to come into the shop and talk to him, Mr. Smith said.
While Mr. Jamies was servicing the tire shredder, the friend accidentally pushed the button turning on the machine, Mr. Smith told Tire Business.
The company called in trauma counselors to aid the workers who witnessed the accident, according to Mr. Smith said. Mr. Jamies, meanwhile, is scheduled to be released from the hospital the week of April 1, he said.
An OSHA spokesman confirmed his agency is investigating the accident.
