BALTIMORE (Jan. 31, 2013) — J. Russell Kimmel, who operated Kimmel Tire Co. until its sale about a decade ago, died Jan. 25 at age 84.
According to an obituary posted in The Baltimore Sun, Mr. Kimmel died from pancreatic cancer at his Reisterstown, Md., home.
In 1945 Mr. Kimmel joined his father Charles E. Kimmel, who had established Kimmel Tire in 1938 on Mount Royal Avenue in Baltimore.
Kimmel Tire had grown to 34 retail locations in Maryland and Virginia by 2002 when it was sold to Monro Muffler Brake Inc.
Mr. Kimmel is survived by his wife Jane Curley Kimmel; daughter Susan Kimmel McCormick; step-children Robert Edward Curley (Lynn), Jane Curley Hogge (Bryan) and Janet Curley Menton (Tom); three siblings and 11 grandchildren. His first wife of 38 years, Mary Garrity Kimmel, died in 1987.
