DANVILLE, Va. (Jan. 23, 2013) — Goodyear has reduced the workforce at its Fayetteville, N.C., plant by 200 and will lay off 41 workers at its Danville factory starting Feb. 4.
Layoffs at the Fayetteville car and light truck tire plant were averted when nearly 200 workers accepted buyouts. Those reductions are being made in phases.
The cuts at the Danville truck and aircraft tire plant will be made starting on Feb. 4, the company said in a prepared statement.
The tire maker did not give a specific reason for the cuts, but a company spokeswoman told Tire Business that "Goodyear's strategy of pursuing targeted market segments means that we make and sell products where we can be competitive and charge for the value of our brand, technology and innovation—we do not produce volume for volume's sake.
"We are continually adjusting our production schedule to align with our targeted market segment strategy and customer demand.
"In some instances, this may mean adjusting staffing levels to reflect our production needs," which is the case with the Danville layoffs.
The spokeswoman said the affected workers would have recall rights under the collective bargaining agreement in place at the plant with the United Steelworkers union.
