TATABANYA, Hungary (Oct. 24, 2012) — Bridgestone Corp. will triple daily capacity at its radial car tire plant in Tatabanya by the first half of 2017 to 18,000 tires with an investment of $346 million.
Bridgestone did not comment on specific reasons for the increase, saying only it is "continuously optimizing its production and supply systems" in order to respond quickly to global market demand trends and "provide customers with high-quality products in a timely manner."
Bridgestone opened the 7.1 million-sq.-ft. plant in Tatabanya — which uses the Bridgestone Innovative and Rational Development (BIRD) automated manufacturing technology — in 2008 after an investment of $260 million. The plant focuses on producing high-performance and larger rim diameter tires.
Bridgestone Tatabánya Termelö Kft., as the local company is known, did not say whether the capacity exapansion will require any changes to the physical structure of the plant, nor did it comment on the project's effect on employment, which stands at 350.
