SEMA, AAPEX to spotlight aftermarket

LAS VEGAS?The Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week will open Oct. 30 with two concurrent shows in Las Vegas?the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show with the Global Tire Expo-Powered by TIA (Tire Industry Association) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the Automotive Aftermarket Parts Exposition (AAPEX), jointly sponsored by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association and the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), at the Sands Expo Center.

The SEMA Show runs Oct. 30-Nov. 2. As in past years, the South Hall of the convention center will house the Global Tire Expo, featuring exhibitors from the tire and wheel industries. TIA will sponsor several educational sessions geared to tire dealers during the event.

AAPEX, open Oct. 30-Nov. 1, will feature a Learning Forum with 32 seminars. All sessions are accredited by the University of the Aftermarket toward the Automotive Aftermarket Professional (AAP) and Master Automotive Aftermarket Professional (MAAP) designations.

The Global Tire Expo schedule includes:

c Annual TIA membership meeting, including installation of officers.

c Tire Industry Honors Awards Ceremony will feature keynote addresses by Albert Wynn, former U.S. congressman from Maryland, and Jack Van Steenburg, chief safety officer at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

TIA will induct Randy Clark, chairman and president of Dunn Tire L.L.C.; Bruce Halle, founder of Discount Tire Co.; the late Paul Kruder, founder of Computerized Information and Management Services Inc.; and Pete Veldman, founder of Tire Rack Inc., into its Hall of Fame.

The association also will award its Ed Wagner Industry Leadership Award to Steve Akridge, executive director of the Virginia Automotive Association, and Reece Hester, executive director of the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association.

During the ceremony, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Tire Business will present its annual Tire Dealer Humanitarian Award.

c Truck Tires at 10: CSA Report Card: Making Customer Service Part of Your Brand, Kevin Rohlwing, TIA senior vice president of training, will discuss how the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) Program works and how it is changing the way tires and wheels on trucks, tractors and trailers are serviced and maintained.

c TPMS at 10: TPMS Best Practices?A Town Hall Meeting, a panel of speakers from both the service and OE sectors of TPMS will speak on automotive training development, up-to-date information on operating procedures and creating profits for dealerships.

c Commercial Tire Forum, Mr. Rohlwing and Tom Formanek, TIA commercial chairman and regional sales manager for Stellar Industries.

c Tires at 2: Successful Tire Dealers Share Their Secrets, a panel of tire dealers will discuss their success stories and answer questions.

c Truck Tires at 10: The Facts on Wide Singles, presented by Mr. Rohlwing; Dennis Hodges, Michelin North America; and Dave Walters, Alcoa Wheels.

c TPMS at 10: TPMS Troubleshooting, Sean MacKinnon, TIA director of automotive training development, and Matt White, TIA director of tire service.

c Tires at 2: How to Keep Your Tire Business From Going Flat in the Next 10 Years, John Bishop, Automotive Training Institute tire specialist, will share ways to increase profits on tires and related services in a highly competitive market.

c Tires at 2: Making Customer Service Part of Your Brand, presented by Mr. Rohlwing.

AAPEX, which caters to automotive parts wholesale distributors, retailers, service chains, jobbers and service professionals, will include the AAIA Town Hall meeting on Oct. 31.

The annual Town Hall will feature a business session with Polk & Co. President Tim Rogers and Danielle Russell, Google Inc.'s industry director, automotive, who will discuss consumer trends related to the auto aftermarket industry.

A political discussion will follow featuring the views of political pundits Terry McAuliffe, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Dan Bartlett, former counselor to President George W. Bush.

The Learning Forum will include two seminars focusing on trends in the aftermarket industry:

c Five Trends in Five Minutes: Trends Affecting the Aftermarket Environment, Mark Seng of Polk will discuss the major trends affecting the automotive industry from hybrid proliferation to the ever-changing new vehicle market.

c 2013 Aftermarket Outlook, David Portalatin, analyst for NPD Group Inc., will present the results from NPD's 2013 Aftermarket Consumer Outlook Survey regarding consumer attitudes and behaviors.
