LOUISVILLE (March 23, 2012) — GITI Tire (USA) Ltd. is adding a SmartWay-verified trailer tire to its lineup of fuel-efficient truck tires.
The GT Radial GT979 FS joins the GSL213 FS steer tire and GT669+ FS drive tire as SmartWay-verified products in GITI Tire's truck tire lineup. The FS designation stands for "fuel savings" and distinguishes the SmartWay-verified product from the standard model.
SmartWay is the Environmental Protection Agency's program to identify trucking components that contribute to fuel efficiency.
William Estupinan, GITI Tire technical director for the Americas, said the news is significant because trailer tires can represent up to half of a set of tires' impact on fuel economy.
According to Estupinan, on a tractor-trailer combination, the steer tires contribute 15 to 20 percent of the tires' overall contribution to fuel economy, drive tires 30 to 40 percent, and trailer tires about 40 to 50 percent.
The GT979 FS is available in four sizes: 295/75R22.5; 285/75R24.5; 11R22.5; and 11R24.5
The drive and steer tires achieved SmartWay verification in 2010.
GITI Tire, the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.-based subsidiary of Singapore-based Chinese tire maker GITI Tire Pte., Ltd., anounced the trailer tire's SmartWay status at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville.
