PALM BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2012) — Northwood University recently honored Keith Crain, Tire Business editorial director and chairman of parent company Crain Communications Inc., as one of nine nationally known business men and women at its 32nd Annual Outstanding Business Leader (OBL) Awards.
The event was held Jan. 21 at The Breakers, Palm Beach, Fla.
In addition to his role as editorial director supervising several Crain publications, Mr. Crain also serves as editor-in-chief of Detroit-based Automotive News and of Crain's Detroit Business. In this role, he uses his regular columns as a forum to address issues and support causes that concern Detroit and the automotive industry, Northwood noted in a press release. “Therefore he is also widely recognized internationally for his contributions to the automotive industry.”
Mr. Crain's first-hand knowledge of publishing and business has assisted him in the development of the family owned company begun by his father in 1916, Northwood continued. Since 1971, the company has grown from four titles to more than 30 business, trade and consumer publications and news websites, and it employs approximately 850 people in 11 offices internationally.
Northwood said it annually “recognizes a select group of men and women for their business achievements and for their support and exemplary leadership of the communities in which they live and work.” These individuals, according to the university, “serve as role models for Northwood University students, all of whom are engaged in the study of business management and who aspire to successful careers. In the 32 years since the program's founding, more than 300 business leaders from more than 30 states and several countries, representing dozens of industries and fields of business expertise, have received the Outstanding Business Leader Award.”
Mr. Crain—who attended Northwestern University and holds honorary doctorate degrees from four universities—is active in a number of civic and professional associations. He also serves as chairman of the board of the College for Creative Studies, a college of fine arts and design; chairman of the Legacy Board of the Detroit Medical Center; and trustee for the board of directors of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau; Downtown Detroit Partnership; Gilmore Car Museum; Automotive Hall of Fame; and the Boy Scouts of America.
Northwood is a private, nonprofit, accredited university specializing in managerial and entrepreneurial education at three full-service, residential campuses located in southern Florida, mid-Michigan and northern Texas.
