TOKYO (April 28, 2011) — Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd.'s support for relief effort for communities hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan has totaled more than $1.1 million thus far.
The support has come from financial donations and other assistance provided by Yokohama and its employees, subsidiaries, affiliates and independent distributors.
The Tokyo-based tire maker said that by April 28, Yokohama Group companies and their employees had donated about $1.1 million to the relief effort, and the company provided the following tally:
- Donations of $760,000 by Yokohama Group companies and their employees in Japan, including a $610,000 corporate donation by the parent company; and
- $330,000 in donations by group companies and their employees in other nations contributed mainly through the Red Cross societies in their nations.
Yokohama Group companies have accompanied their financial donations with material support—including donations of food, clothing and other necessities through the Japanese Red Cross Society and through other organizations. Human assistance has included participation by employee volunteers in onsite relief activities, the hiring of individuals who lost their jobs in the disaster, and funding for a year's free accommodation in public housing for persons displaced by the disaster, Yokohama said.
The company noted that support for the relief effort is ongoing, and management and employees “are committed to helping people in the affected communities return to their pre-disaster lifestyles as soon as possible.”
