WASHINGTON (April 22, 2011) — The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) has singled out six U.S. tire makers with Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) awards for improvements in worker health and safety at their factories.

Awarded annually since 1981, the SHIP awards are presented to companies that demonstrate workplace safety improvements, measured by the incidence rate for lost workday cases.

The RMA presents awards in two catetories: “Excellence” for facilities that achieve an incidence rate that is 75-percent better than the average achieved by plants that provided data to RMA; and “Improvement” for plants that achieve an incidence rate that is both 10- percent better than its rate in the previous year and the same or better than the RMA average incidence rate.

The awards are given both for tire production facilities and internal supplier plants.

    Companies earning Excellence awards are:

Bridgestone Americas Manufacturing, Aiken County, S.C.; Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions, Long Beach, Calif.; Cooper, Findlay, Ohio Goodyear, Kingman, Ariz.; and Pirelli Tire L.L.C., Rome, Ga.;.

    Companies earning Improvement awards are:

Bridgestone Americas, Bloomington, Ill., and Russellville, Ark.; Continental Tire the Americas L.L.C., Aldora Mills, Ga.; Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., Tupelo, Miss.; and Michelin North America Inc., Greenville, S.C. (two plants), and Asheboro, N.C.; and Goodyear, Buffalo, N.Y.; Gadsden, Ala.; Lawton, Okla.; Topeka, Kan.; and Akron.
