Trelleborg 'Blue' ag concept has eco traits
PARIS—Trelleborg Wheel Systems S.p.A. has launched the TM Blue ag concept tire, which it claimed can decrease the use of natural resources and environmental impact while boosting farm productivity.
Trelleborg debuted the concept Feb. 22 at the SIMA 2011 exhibition in Paris.
“We challenge our organization daily to look for environmentally friendly approaches that improve the performance and efficiency of our products and solutions,” said Lorenzo Ciferri, marketing director of agricultural and forestry tires.
“The mission of the TM Blue concept is to move from the traditional theme of low soil compaction to an advanced overall respect for the earth. This enables farmers to benefit from our caring for the environment and can mean real savings in their pocket through increased productivity and lowered fuel consumption.”
The company said it developed the TM Blue concept to respect soil structure and preserve its organic life by minimizing mechanical damage caused by compression and bad or wrong tillage. Trelleborg claimed this is achieved with the tire's extra wide footprint, carcass deflection capability and the overall pressure distribution on the field.
The tire allows the soil to return to its original state as an organic reactor that is capable of absorbing air-bound nutrients, recycling crop residues and retaining water to ensure high crop yields in the short, medium and long term, according to Trelleborg.
Additionally, the tire maker said the TM Blue concept reduces fuel consumption and lowers CO2 emissions.

The Fort Mill-based company's industrial tire business unit is offering the new ContiPT18 in the first 10 of 11 planned sizes in standard low-rolling-resistance compound, with a “clean” or non-marking compound to be introduced later this quarter, according to Carol Piechan, U.S. sales manager.
The ContiPT18—with a tread design similar to Conti's SC18 super elastic tire—features a wide flat profile with increased lug-to-void ratio. The company described the design as a deep, aggressive lug pattern that also includes a modified rib to enhance traction while delivering improved lateral stability.
Planned sizes for the PT18 are: 16x5x101/2; 16x6x101/2; 18x6x12 1/8; 18x7x12 1/8; 18x8x12 1/8; 21x7x15; 21x8x15; 22x8x16; 22x9x16; 22x12x16; and 21x9x15, which will be available in the year's third quarter.
“The ContiPT18 is one of the first industrial tires we have introduced that is specifically engineered for North American forklift usage,” Ms. Piechan said. “Forklift operators can now look to the ContiPT18 for a press-on band tire that will improve their traction on uneven and wet surfaces such as loading docks, outdoor applications and ramp inclines.”
The ContiPT18 standard compounds are currently shipping from the tire maker's distribution center in Lockbourne, Ohio. Distribution will be expanded to the company's other distribution centers in Redlands, Calif., Gainesville, Ga., and Oshawa, Ontario, when the non-marking compound becomes available in the second quarter.
Conti's family of press-on band solid tires also includes the MH20 and MC20.
Yokohama tires OE on Audi A7
INGOLSTADT, Germany—German car maker Audi A.G. has begun fitting its A7 Sportback, a luxury four-door hatchback coupe, with 20-inch Advan Sport tires from Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. as original equipment.
The new fitment—size 265/35R20 99Y XL (extra load)—is Yokohama's fourth OE contract with Audi. The others are on the S6 and S8 sedans and Q7 SUV, Yokohama said.
The Audi A7 Sportback—described as combining the “sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon”—was launched in Europe last fall and is being introduced in other markets this year. Audi expects to sell about 200,000 units annually of the luxury coupe worldwide.
Audi offers three variants of a V-6 engine for the all-wheel-drive A7: two gasoline and one diesel generating between 204 and 300 hp.
The tires supplied to Audi are marked “AO” for Audi Original, Yokohama said.
Press materials from Audi show tire fitments for the A7 ranging from 18- to 20-inch rim diameters.
Federal launches Couragia F/X
TAIPEI, Taiwan—Taiwanese tire maker Federal Corp. has added the Couragia F/X high-performance SUV tire to its Couragia Adventure tire series.
The new tire, which is available now, was designed to deliver “steering precision, powerful controllability and uniquely long mileage for a comfortable ride,” Federal said. According to the company, performance characteristics of the tire include “remarkably short” wet and dry braking distances and high cornering responsiveness, allowing it to meet the needs of high-performance vehicles such as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and X6, Audi Q7 and others.
The Couragia F/X features an asymmetric tread pattern and sports a “wide and stability-improved footprint,” Federal said. Other features include a scuff rib to enhance sidewall durability and protect the rim and stiff, interconnected tread blocks to increase traction by boosting the number of edges in the contact patch.
Federal said its engineers developed a tread compound using a mixture of “ultra-grip, high styrene rubber, super-rigid, nanotechnology carbon black and new high distribution silica,” giving the Couragia F/X good mileage performance and a high level of wet traction.
The tire is available in numerous popular sizes ranging from 17-inch to 20-inch rim diameters in V-, W- and Y-rated versions.
Kumho gains OE on Jeep export
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.—Chrysler Group L.L.C. has selected Kumho Tire Co. Inc.'s Eco Solus KL21 ultra-high-performance tire as an OE fitment for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee shipped to markets outside of North America.
Chrysler will equip Grand Cherokees headed to countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East with the KL21 in sizes 265/60R18 or 265/50R20. Manufactured with a silica-based rubber compound, the tire enhances wet road performance, improves fuel efficiency and boasts fair handling and reduced noise, Kumho said.
Kumho's relationship with Chrysler dates back to 2006, when the Rancho Cucamonga-based tire maker first offered the Ecsta KH11 UHP tire as an option on the international version of the 2007 Chrysler Sebring.
It was the company's first OE fitment contract with a U.S. auto maker.
“Kumho Tire has already gained a strong market confidence in North America, the biggest tire market in the world, by being one of the top five manufacturers in the replacement equipment tires market, including UHP tires,” said Son Doo-hyung, Kumho Tire USA Inc.'s senior vice president of OE sales. “We will continue to actively target the global OE market for premium vehicles and expand partnerships with overseas auto makers.”
