INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 20, 2010) — Goodyear is the designated tire supplier for the 34th annual World Figure 8 Championship Sept. 9-11 at the Indianapolis Speedrome.
The speedway calls the $20,000-to-win World Figure 8 “a racing classic. It is the only race on the planet that a driver can win without being on the track at the start or even seeing the checkered flag.”
Drivers are placed in the final results by total laps completed, according to the Indianapolis Speedrome. The 32-car starting grid is assembled with the 24 drivers who are locked-in through qualifying races on Friday Sept. 10. The remaining eight spots are added through unlimited time trials on Saturday afternoon. Every other car is lined-up as alternates by their qualifying time, with the line of alternates added individually to the race as cars drop out of the event.
In the past, drivers have entered as an alternate and drove their way to a third place finish. Cars leaving the surface also can return, “making this the only race that can grow in size as the laps increase,” the speedway said. “All of this while having to survive the dangerous crossover 900-plus times during the three-hour time period. It will take your breath away!”
Goodyear tires—exclusive to the World Figure 8 Championship and available only at the Speedrome—will go on sale Saturday, Sept. 4, at the track, according to Checkered Flag Enterprises L.L.C.
“We have produced and tested a great new tire that will give competitors their best bang for the buck while keeping the competition level very high in this long distance contest,” said Ronnie Snoddy of ST Racing Tires, the Goodyear representative for racing tires east of the Mississippi River and Minnesota, in a Speedrome statement.
The racetrack is at 802 South Kitley Ave., Indianapolis. More information is available on its website.
