KARAWANG, Indonesia (May 14, 2010) — Bridgestone Corp. plans to expand capacity for car and light truck tires at its P.T. Bridgestone Tire Indonesia plant in Karawang by 11 percent over the coming two years in a project budgeted at $46.5 million.
The expansion, slated to be on stream by the first half of 2012, will expand car and light truck tire output to 29,400 units, Bridgestone said. The Karawang plant began production in 1999, supplying passenger and light truck tires to both the domestic market and key overseas markets, including North America and Europe, Bridgestone said.
The plant is in the midst of an expansion project begun in August 2007 to increase daily capacity by 8,400 units; the new capacity should be on stream before year-end.
Bridgestone did not say whether the project involves a physical expansion of the plant, which is built on a 91-acre plot. The plant employs 3,288 workers.
This is the eighth tire plant expansion project Bridgestone has announced in the past nine months, representing $1.25 billion in capital spending.
