HARBEL, Liberia (May 14, 2010) — Twenty volunteer doctors and nurses from Children's Surgery International provided 142 operations to underprivileged children during a five-day surgical mission at Firestone Medical Center in Duside, Liberia, near the Firestone Natural Rubber Co. L.L.C. plantation at Harbel, according to Bridgestone Americas.
Firestone Medical Center staff worked with the volunteer doctors and nurses to perform hernia repairs, scar revisions, skin grafts, tumor removals, cleft lip and palate surgeries, and other procedures, the tire maker said. The volunteer doctors also trained Firestone surgeons in specialized procedures.
Firestone began renovating the medical center in Duside in 2004, after it had been severely damaged by Liberia's civil war and abandoned for years, according to Dan Adomitis, president of Firestone Natural Rubber.
“Knowing all the hard work that we have put into rebuilding our entire operation, being able to host this mission is something in which our team takes great pride,” Mr. Adomitis said.
