TORONTO (Aug. 25, 2009) — The “Be Tire Smart” national education campaign will be showing Toronto drivers how they can save money on fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with proper tire inflation.
During a three-day public event Aug. 24-26 at Ontario Place, the Be Tire Smart Mobile Project team will demonstrate how to locate the proper tire pressure using its hybrid vehicle and show event patrons how to correctly measure tire pressure.
The team will distribute free tire pressure gauges and tread wear indicators to event patrons. Patrons also are encouraged to take part in a short tire maintenance survey for the chance to win a set of four new tires.
The campaign is funded by the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency.
“The number of vehicles operating with under- or over-inflated tires across the country, day in and day out, is disturbing, considering that underinflation is the leading cause of tire failure,” said RAC President Glenn Maidment. “Our survey findings show that there is an urgent need for better tire inflation and maintenance practices.”
